Objectives

To instruct all personnel involved in crane operations, rigging and slinging operations, e.g. riggers, maintenance personnel, maintenance supervisors, deck crew etc. to guide crane operators by hand and radio signals in both good and restricted visibility.  To ensure delegates have an understanding of the legal requirements pertaining to rigging and crane operations, the requirements for pre-use inspections and discard criteria of lifting equipment, the safe working procedures for rigging and to ensure delegates can use lifting equipment safely and not exceed the load limit imposed on them.

Classroom instruction on the following:

  • Responsibilities of the banksman
  • Basic crane appreciation
  • Crane hand and radio signals
  • Legislation
  • Terminology used in rigging, slinging and lifting operations.
  • Calculation of angles and tensions
  • Estimation of weights
    • Technical aspects, pre-use inspection, safe use and correct slinging of loads using:
      • Wire rope slings
      • Polyester webbing slings
      • Round (endless) slings
      • Chains
    • Technical aspects, pre-use inspection, safe and correct use of:
      • Shackles
      • Eyebolts
      • Plate clamps
      • Hooks
    • Technical aspects, pre-use inspection safe and correct use of:
      • Chain blocks
      • Pull lifts
      • Tirfors
      • Beam clamps/Padeyes
      • Sheave/snatch blocks
      • Air/hydraulic winches

Practical instruction and delegate participation on the following:

  • Inspection of equipment before use to include:
      • Wire rope slinging
      • Round (endless) slinging
      • Shackles
      • Hooks
      • Eyebolts
  • Slinging of various loads using the above lifting gear
  • Banking/signalling the crane using hand and radio signals in good and restricted visibility.
  • Using rigging equipment to lift and transfer a load over various distances with obstacles and height restrictions.
  • Care of equipment after use.

NB

1.    During all practical exercises delegates must be able to assess various angles and calculate tensions in all lifting equipment being used.

2.    The above exercises may vary depending on the practical training area being used.

The course finishes with a written course assessment.
